What is EMDR therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a research-based therapy that helps people heal from traumatic or distressing experiences. When difficult events aren’t fully processed, they can remain “stuck,” leading to ongoing emotional distress, anxiety, or negative beliefs about oneself.

In EMDR, a therapist guides you to briefly focus on these memories while using gentle bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or tapping. This process helps the brain reprocess the memory so it feels less intense and no longer disruptive.

Many people find that EMDR reduces emotional and physical distress and allows them to move forward with greater ease. EMDR is commonly used to treat trauma and PTSD, as well as anxiety, panic, and other stress-related concerns.

How is EMDR therapy different from other therapies?

"EMDR therapy does not require talking in detail about the distressing issue or completing homework between sessions. EMDR therapy, rather than focusing on changing the emotions, thoughts, or behaviors resulting from the distressing issue, allows the brain to resume its natural healing process." (EMDRIA)
